"It's the hardest thing in the world to take the mundane and try to show how special it is."

Eve Arnold had died leaving a photographic legacy of her work as a photojournalist with "the poor, the old and the underdog" as well as the stars.

Arnold was the first woman to join the Magnum photographic agency, and much of her work fell within its tradition of in-depth editorialphotography. She held characteristically trenchant views on the minority – and at times marginalised – status of female photojournalists, while being acutely aware of the role played by female stars as well as by unrecorded women the world over. The whole of the Magnum agency went on location to shoot John Huston's filming of The Misfits (1961), but it was Arnold's intimate portraits of Marilyn Monroe, fragile and poised by turn, (including one incredible image, where she emerges from the black of a nightclub into the white glare of the spotlight, boogying uncertainly with a smiling Arthur Miller) that endured. Arnold not only befriended many of her subjects, including such greats as Monroe, Joan Crawford, Isabella Rossellini and Dietrich, but increasingly wrote about them as well as photographing them

It was Picture Post's publication of the story in 1951 that launched her career. The effects were immediate. She joined Magnum, becoming a full member in 1957, and covered such high-profile news stories as Republican conventions and the McCarthy hearings, as well as conducting a 10-year study of a founding family of Brookhaven Township, and photographing the then largely taboo subject of births. (Later, Arnold was to say that this assisted her own recovery from the trauma of miscarriage.) Her marriage did not survive, however, and she gradually transferred to a London base, ostensibly for the sake of her son's education. She lived in the same flat in Mayfair until ill-health forced her to move to a nursing home in her 90s.

In the 1960s and 70s Arnold travelled back to the US, where she documented the civil rights movement, and to such "closed" regions as the Soviet Union and China. In 1971 she made a film, Women Behind the Veil, going inside Arabian hammams and harems. Regular features continued for Look, Life, Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, Geo, Stern, Epoca, Paris-Match and – especially – the Sunday Times colour supplement, under the picture editorship of Michael Rand.

In 2003 she was made OBE. Eve Arnold's People, edited by Brigitte Lardinois, was published in 2009. In 2010 she received a lifetime achievement prize at the Sony World Photography awards in Cannes, accepted by her grandson, Michael, on her behalf. Her negatives, films and videos are now at Yale University and the Tosca Fund has acquired the vintage prints, all signed and dated. She is survived by Frank and grandchildren, Michael, Sarah and David.

Henri Cartier-Bresson is responsible for some of the most iconic photographic images of portraiture and photojournalism. In many cases his photographs have become defining records of modern history, portraits of European culture from the 1930s to the 1970s, and examples of a ‘decisive moment’ — a phrase often used to describe Cartier-Bresson’s works, which can illustrate action, emotion and an entire story in a single image. Cartier-Bresson’s work focuses on humanity and, often preferring to blend into a situation, his camera captured faces and bodies full of emotion and intentions both intimate and bold.

Best Pictures: World Photography Awards 2011

An open-air movie enthralls remote villagers in India's Maharashtra state in this year's winning picture from the "Arts and Culture" category of the World Photography Awards Professional Competition, which were announced in London late last month.

According to Indian photographer Amit Madheshiya, travelling cinemas visit villages far from movie theaters once a year, screening an eclectic mix of films for the equivalent of about 40 U.S. cents a ticket.

Administered by the World Photography Organisation and sponsored by Sony, the awards are chosen by a panel of 12 judges, which this year was led by British photography critic Francis Hodges and included National Geographic magazine senior photography editor Kathy Moran. (The National Geographic Society owns both the magazine and National Geographic News.)

Untold Stories Exhibition of the Month

In 2010 students and staff of the Queenland College of Art spent three weeks working in Cambodia and Vietnam. Traveling to Siem Reap, Battambang, Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh, we worked with many NGOs and the community. We documented the plight of the poor, the disabled and the sick but in particular the positive use of international aid to bring hope to the lives of so many.

This exhibition displays the results of the project from Cambodia. Here are ‘Untold Stories’ of those who survived the Vietnam War, the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields and the ongoing legacy of unexploded landmines in this country. An online feature of this project can be viewed at The Argus.

Art photographers are increasingly frustrated by a climate of regulation and suspicion

THERE was a time Rex Dupain looked forward to his almost daily pilgrimages to Bondi Beach. The photographer spent nearly four years capturing the tribes and subcultures of Australia's most recognisable arc of sand and sea -- lovers and lifesavers, sunbathers and surfers, airborne skateboarders and preening muscle men -- for his 2007 Sydney exhibition, The Colour of Bondi. Hasselblad in hand, Dupain loved working on instinct, riding the current of a crowd, trying to spot something before it happened. As he succinctly puts it: "It's all about the moment."

In 2004, Dupain's unrehearsed beach photographs featured in Rex and Max Dupain's Sydney, at the Museum of Sydney. Rex Dupain is the son of celebrated 20th century photographer Max and this father-and-son exhibition attracted more than 27,000 visitors, making it one of the boutique museum's most successful shows. A bit of story

My interest in photography was nurtured by my parents who always had a camera handy to record and document our family life. In recent years I have taken an interest in digital photography and have been recording community gatherings and events in Brisbane.

My images have been published in print and online by Brisbane City Council, the Australian Democrats, the Gay and Lesbian Welfare Association, Queensland Peace Network, various University Student groups, The Catholic Leader, Kiaros Magazine, St Philip's Church Annerley, Junction Park The Annerley Primary School, Oxfam Australia and Senator Andrew Bartlett's web.

Over a year ago, the association of L'Arche communities in Quebec (AAQ - Association des Arches du Québec) and L'Arche Canada-Communications began to work together to create a photo exhibit that would illustrate life in L'Arche in Haiti and in Quebec through the artistic eye of photographer Jonathan Boulet-Groulx.

Jonathan Boulet-Groulx is a young reporter-photographer who has been involved with L'Arche as a volunteer and an assistant for more than five years. He has been living in Chantal, Haiti, since May 2009. When he isn't busy with L'Arche Chantal's work-expansion project, he might be nestled in his hammock, or he might be taking photographs that illustrate the living conditions of people with intellectual disabilities in this, his adopted country. He intends to continue this work of photo-documentation indefinitely, in order to paint a portrait of intellectual disabilities in the world ...

Photographer Philip Blenkinsop has been based in Bangkok for the last twenty years, travelling throughout Asia documenting forgotten conflicts, rebel groups and life and death on Asian streets. His images, that have been published and exhibited around the world, have won him numerous awards. In particular, his photographs of the forgotten people, the Hmong tribe in Laos. Philip is the subject of a documentary about his work.
